Liquid crystalline hydrazones revisited: dipolar interactions vs hydrogen bonding affecting mesomorphic properties

چکیده
In order to understand the role of dipolar interactions vs. H-bonding, a series hydrazones were synthesised from 4-alkoxy-, 3,4-dialkoxy- or 3,4,5-trialkoxybenzaldehydes and phenyl, bromo- nitrophenylhydrazine, respectively. Their mesomorphic properties investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarising optical microscopy (POM), X-ray diffraction (WAXS, SAXS) compared with known members. Only those derived 3,4,5-trisalkoxybenzaldehyde either meta, meta-dinitro- ortho, para-dinitrophenylhydrazine displayed hexagonal columnar mesophases. All other derivatives non-mesomorphic, even when H-bonds present. Dipole moments various nitro-substituted experimentally determined dielectric measurements supported theoretical DFT calculations, which indicated that mesophase formation is mostly governed strong dipole moment further enforced intramolecular H-bonding.

Mesomorphic phenanthroline derivatives: novel architectures based on hydrogen bonding.
Strong hydrogen bonding has been observed in mesomorphic phenanthroline compounds engineered from diacylaminobenzene platforms: a columnar organization is found in the free ligands (n = 12 or 16) whereas a smectic arrangement is evidenced in a palladium complex (n = 16).
متن کاملSynthesis and mesomorphic properties of rigid-core ionic liquid crystals.
Ionic liquid crystals combine the unique solvent properties of ionic liquids with self-organization found for liquid crystals. We report a detailed analysis of the structure-property relationship of a series of new imidazolium-based liquid crystals with an extended aromatic core. Investigated parameters include length and nature of the tails, the length of the rigid core, the lateral substituti...
متن کاملHydrogen bonding vs. halogen bonding: the solvent decides.
Control of intermolecular interactions is integral to harnessing self-assembly in nature. Here we demonstrate that control of the competition between hydrogen bonds and halogen bonds, the two most highly studied directional intermolecular interactions, can be exerted by choice of solvent (polarity) to direct the self-assembly of co-crystals. Competitive co-crystal formation has been investigate...
متن کاملThermotropic and lyotropic behaviour of new liquid-crystalline materials with different hydrophilic groups: synthesis and mesomorphic properties
Several new calamitic liquid-crystalline (LC) materials with flexible hydrophilic chains, namely either hydroxy groups or ethylene glycol units, or both types together, have been synthesized in order to look for new functional LC materials exhibiting both, thermotropic and lyotropic behaviour. Such materials are of high potential interest for challenging issues such as the self-organization of ...
متن کاملMesomorphic ionic hyperbranched polymers: effect of structural parameters on liquid-crystalline properties and on the formation of gold nanohybrids.
Branched thermotropic liquid crystals were successfully obtained from ionic interactions between hyperbranched polyamidoamine and sodium dodecylsulfate. These complexes present columnar rectangular and lamellar thermotropic mesophases as demonstrated by polarized optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and small-angle X-ray scattering. The relationships between the structural cha...
